I have been on the forums for a while.. and through reading/posting I have learned a LOT about fish, water params, feeding etc.. but.. not much about equipment. I know about sumps, fuge, skimmers, lights etc but not quite enough. I bought my whole kit together.. so I really did nothing mechanically. I understand the concepts of most of these pieces of equipment but not enough for my liking.

I am awaiting info on a new job I may be getting.. If I get the job I am debating on going with a much bigger tank. My LFS has tanks, with stands but they are in the $3700 range for around a 120G. Is that good or would I be better off buying pieces and building? That seems high to me once you add in lights/sump and everything else. The setups at the LFS with cheaper stands are a little cheaper but stil in the 3k.

Just trying to find somewhere to look and compare prices, etc for all kinds of different equipment other than LFS and just to learn about the equipment to have a better understanding. Any good places to try? it seems through my massive searching I see places who sell pieces of this.. pieces of that.. but no place that sells everything in like a "kit" form.

3-4K is in the ballpark here for 120G. This is not a cheap hobby, but it's a lot of fun, even if your friends will think you're a bit fishy!

Some people try craigslist and get lucky, worth checking especially in this economy when hobbyists are selling to get out of the hobby for a while.

120G w/ stand.... hrm.... $3700 sounds high-ish. Besides tank and stand does it come with anything else? A lighted canopy might add $600-1000 depending on the lights....

sounds quite high if thats all you get. up here a drilled tank would be about 700-800. so 3000 for a stand? that aint priceless. lol a good stand at my lfs for that would be in the 800 range again . you could make your own, and do it very nicely for about 300 tops.
