    Hey guys/gals,

New series to my questions. I have never (ever) dealt with this before. How in the hell do you cure fin rot. And if any body can answer this what is fin rot? Or better what causes this? I have managed to get the nitrate lvls in my tank down significantly but now the nitrite lvl are high and what fish I do have left look like they are falling apart. All of the babies sadly have died and I have changed water, filters, cycled it basically I have done everything that I know I could have done. I love my fish they are beautiful and I am trying to keep them alive. But I have nothing left to do. Any suggestions?

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
    Welcome to 3reef,

I would say that new tank syndrome finally caught up with you.

If you want a better out come, cycle the tank completely prior to adding fish and test your own parameters for ammonia and nitrites and nitrates.

I would get those values and do the appropriate water change and then wait before adding more fish.

Monitor feedings and do not over feed.

    Good luck to you.

    Thanks

Yeah probably so, it's just so weird that I have had my other tanks for pretty close to 5 years and never had this many problems. I have it cycling now with another partial water change done about an hour ago. Nitrate and nitrite lvls have gone down a good little bit. Tested my other tanks and they are perfect. Well for the fish I have in them they are perfect.

alright, I know it's been awhile since I have been on here so here's an update on how everything is going. My ten gallon tank is up running and in great shape. All of the fish i did have in sadly died, except two of the babies. I completely redid the tank drained it washed it the whole nine yards added the babies back to the tank with a whole new outlook. After speaking with a local pet store they came to the conclusion that one if the fish that I had purchased had to have already been sick for me to have the outcome that I did have. The only thing that struck me as odd was that the babies were in the tank when the other fish were dying from nitrate poisoning and fin rot. But they show(ed) no signs of it. So it's almost a month or so later I have added to two new mollies to my tank and a plecto. They are doing great. I am thinking of adding maybe two more fish, but not to sure that is a good idea.

    Thanks,
    Ang.

Hold off for a while and see how your nitrate levels do before adding fish. Make sure you are prepared to make more frequent and larger water changes and to clean out the filtration more often with a larger load.

After reading a few things and doing a little research I am not going to add different fish. I was thinking glo fish but they die so easily I might get another molly towards the end of the month but that's about it. Other than the water chem being off, I have checked everyday since the middle of july and all last month and all of this month, It lvled out perfectly.

I really do believe that after the first batch of mollies I bought something was wrong with them, I purchased them from petsmart. They acted funny from the start and I thought maybe it was just that breed of fish, but after 5 weeks of fighting the water problems and the fist sickness' and all I just let them go shut the tank down and out of all that two babies survived. Dalmatian mollies, it's been over a month and a half, I let the babies grown to a decent size and went and bought two golden mollies and a plecto, it's been almost a month since I got them and the only problem I had was the water got cloudy for about 3 days and it cleared up on it's own. I swear on every fiber of my being if I ever get out of my apartment I am getting my two 55 gl tanks back. My mom has them right now. They are SO much easier to care for than this little one.

    Thanks,
    Ang.
