It really depends on what you want to spend on it...

My first job was working at a HobbyTown USA. :) If you want something with decent speed that's RTR (ready to run) out of the box, I'd go with a Duratrax Raze (they have buggy and truggy setups now) or one of the traxxas cars.

If you want to spend a little (ok, alot) more cash but get a much higher quality and faster car, I'd look at OFNA. I can't recommend which one because they've changed their product line alot since my RC days  OFNA Racing

Nothing beats the smell of nitromethane in the morning :) Plus that stuff is awesome to play with on the fourth of July...:D

I just sold all my RC stuff for $300. I had a Revo 3.3 4X4 with the 2speed auto tranny with the forward only conversion. It was pretty fast. All the plastic was replaced with aluminum parts. I loved it for me because it was tough and could stand up to my beating. My buddy had the eRevo that he converted to brushless lipo. It was way to fast for any of us to control. That thing could easily do 65-70 mph. With a car that powerful you have to be very skilled with the controller (i had a lead finger!). You can pick up used stuff pretty cheap on craigslist.

i think 60-70 is where id like to go at this point in an on/of road vehicle. the future holds a 100+ on road car though.

    any1 heard of losi ?

yeah, i know alot of guys who run losi. Nice cars. I used to run on clay tracks here in FL. My revo would only do like 45 and that was way too much for me ha ha ha. I was a total newb.

returned your PM. To get a truggy in the 60-70mph range your going to have to put a pretty nice sized motor in it. The ofna x1-CRT i offered yah for 350.00 shipped is capable, but you will likelly need something pretty serious power wise for that speed. Since you want to stay around 700 though, that leaves yah 350.00 to spend on a novarossi ;-)

The Losi 8 was super popular back in my day (like 4 years ago). In big-name rc buggy races, it seemed that half of the cars were losi 8's. I'm pretty sure they have an electric brushless now as well.

But I thought you were trying to go nitro? A losi 8 with an O.S. engine kicks some rear end :) But buggies and truggies are not meant to go fast. they're meant for offroad. My Duratrax Raze hit about 40-45 mph top speed. But it had all wheel drive and really kicked up some dirt. Plus with the Raze, they built their plastic parts so tough that if you break something, they'll replace it for free. I only broke one part on that car. Right now it's torn down and in a box because I busted up 2 tires running it so hard and I took it apart to clean it. Never put it back together.

If you buy an RTR car, do yourself a favor and replace the servos with metal geared. Stock servos strip out really easy with hard driving. And buy a failsafe. I have a hole in my fence from when my car's reciever batteries died with it stuck at full throttle  Thankfully it was my backyard that caught the out of control banshee screaming along.

I tried buggies but being a newb, I quickly realized they weren't for me. I liked the truggy because it was more forgiving just not nearly as agile.
