recently we had a big storm go through our area and i had no power at my house for about 8 hours, fortunately nothing died but i was wondering what everyone else does in such a situation.

A friend of mine has a 280 g system and his power was out for about 17 hours and he lost 16 fish :-[ . He now bought a 5000 watt generator to fix that problem, but i don't have that kind of money right now so i'm looking at alternatives :-/

Yeah, these work great. We bought one from our LFS last year during the hurricanes when we lost power for 10 days. They have ones you put batteries in that come with airstone, plug it in, put the airstone into the tank but it only activates when the power actually goes off. It was nice security when we had to evacuate twice last year. Hard to move a 65 gal. with 100 lbs LR! Anyway, they also carry them at WalMart for keeping livebait alive when fishing, in the sporting goods dept. Plan on getting 2 more for this hurricane season!!

Alternately, a car battery with a power inverter works also...about $60 investment there... :)

I believe too high temps are harder on the animals than colder. If you lose power, wrap blankets or towels around the tank to keep the temp more stable....cover the tops to prevent evaporative cooling. :)

The battery powered airstones are a great thing to have around! Give oxygenation and flow ;D

I actually am a oxygen user ( botched surgery ) full time. I have a concentrator that makes oxygen from the air but that runs on electricity. I have backup tanks for when the power goes out. I can just rig up an air stone to my backup cylinder and my tank gets 90% pure oxygen. hehe
Makes me think of a fish or shrimp with oxygen canula in its nose..er gills....theres a funny thought..lol
