O have a drilled tank with a corner overflow that "surges". The water drains, hits a certain level, slurps then refills and is quiet for another 10 seconds and the process begins again. I started with a straight pipe front he overflow to the sump but changed it to one with an S bend which made things better but did not fix it. I have also tried adjusting the output of my pump with no difference. This should be easy to fix but so far i have failed!

assume you are using a durso pipe? Did you try a valve ontop(some people have good luck with that)?

Not sure why some people have more noise than others..

my old ones were loader and the guy I had got it from(tank etc) did not cut them the same length so only 1 flowed properly which annoyed me anyways so I made up a couple new ones same length. I also made it so I could remove the the elbow section up(not glued)so when I wanted to do a little cleaning in the overflow it was easier.

Plan was to add valve to reduce noise but wanted to test them first and was amazed how much quieter they were so never added the valve.

I was always told not to add a valve on the overflow side as it could cause a flood if it can't keep up with the return pump. There is only one overflow on this tank so having uneven pipes is not an issue here.

Maybe you did not understand.. did you drill a hole in the top of the pipe in your overflow box?

    Look up durso pipe online.

Not saying to put a check valve in..

PS guess we will wait on your pics and have better idea what you have setup

Ahh… ok… there is already a small tube in the top of the pipe and two 1/4 inch holes on either side. I m having issues with Photobucket so I have not been able to upload a photo yet. Thanks for your patience!

I just dialed back the return pump by about 50% and that seems to have fixed the problem. I think that the flow was too high and that not enough air was being entrained into the system.
