Hello to all reading this. I just joined and an email told me to come here and make myself known. I have recently acquired a pretty big tank. Probably not that big to all professionals, but pretty big to me. And given that I am a marine biology major, I figured - what best use for it than a saltwater aquarium. Tomorrow, I will go and look at all the equipment I need to buy and maybe make a few purchases. I want to have a reef aquarium, so it will probably be a while until I have pictures. I've read it takes several months until you can start introducing corals; but count on them once I get started.
Now, if you've got any advise or personal stories, I'd be glad for the support. Thanks.

Edit note:
I've been reading other posts and people seem to get reef tanks later on, after experiencing non-reef tanks first. To all reef-loving creatures out there, please know that as excited as I am about this, I will do my homework before going into this. I visit the library at least once a week as it is, so I'll just have to check out some material related to this. I will do my best to not harm any under my care, once I've learned enough to care for any. Just putting it out there, since I know I might be a little upset and distraught if I heard of anyone just jumping into thinngs like these.
Like this bar owner that I heard about. Made me so mad. A bar here in the the town where I live bought sharks (not sure what species, but I heard they were small) and put them on display in the middle of the dance floor. In the floor. With people walking and dancing on top of them. Not surprisingly, they all died. Apparently the guy didn't know how not just the tank's environment is important for the animals, but also the environment surrounding it. I don't understand how he didn't think about how much stress the animals would be under.
So, before this gets any longer, I will take it slow, so fear not.

Sounds like your off to a great start, not wanting to race into it! Going slow is the way to go!! But don't fret, I have probably 12 corals and my tank was born the first of the year. I have gone VEEEERRRRRRYYYYYY slowly, as it sound that you want to do. You just have to make sure that you give the cycle plenty of time and keep your water parameters perfect for the life of your tank. I guess what I want to say is don't worry, it won't be a year before your tank sees some corals!!
