This is a note to all beginner reefers. When you purchase your dryrock/liverock, try to get big, long pieces. I did the complete oposite. Kinda. I got big heavy kinda round (NOT LONG) rocks and small and round rocks. It was a mistake. If you start off with the correct type of rock, it will make aquascaping 50x easier. Its hard to create "caves" and "shelves" with the rock i got so try to buy it right the first time.

    Just for the record,
    Ryan

I agree with this completely I have mostly round'd rocks and a few long ones the long ones are so much easier to stack and position the way you want.

I thought I purchased all my rock from 1 shop on 1 trip and set it up on the floor, before commiting to purchasing any of it , if I could stack it how I wanted without needing any support then I knew I was getting rock that would be easy to work with in the tank

what I didnt do perfectly, was remember how long 5ft is or how tall 18 inches are
and had to go back because when I stacked it in my tank the way I remembered it in the shop, it finished 1 ft short of each end

its just as hard to aquascape with thin long pieces, especially if those are the majority of pieces.ime most of the time more jagged pieces are easier to stack and look natural.

round rocks are the worst kind to get tho, stay away from smooth ones too, you dont want your tank to look like a cichlid one with the huge smooth river stones.

I made the mistake of picking a few pieces of large, dense rock. They went on the bottom. As I added more base rock over time, I picked longer, more porous pieces. For one thing, you get more bang for your buck! Porous=lighter weight=less money. I still tend to buy bigger pieces, but I take a hammer to them if I don't get the look I want! :hammer:

with jagged rock you get more options of how to stack it since it doesnt want to slide off.

You'll have to start making your own, much cheaper, just takes a while to wash them really good so you can use em in your tank.

Some of the rocks from the rock gallery almost look to fake though, I don't think I'd want faces in my reef.

    Good find
