you increase Calk by 30 and your Alk drops by 2

whats your Mag level - is it able to support your 2 target numbers?

as alk is increased, ca decreases. the only way to make them both be high is to have a higher magnesium level. as you dose ca, your alk will always decrease, and as you dose alk, your ca will always decrease.

trick i have found for keeping the ca stable (and then the alk will follow) is to shoot to have your mg at a very stable, non-fluctuating level roughly 3.1-3.5 times the level of your ca. this should cause everything to fall into place nicely. Then after a few days your ca will level out, and a few days later your alk will then follow.

once your there, by monitoring alk closely you can then know if anything is going to change; a fluctuation in alk will mean a fluctuation in ca is to follow in a few days, and possibly a fluctuation in mg after that if its significant enough.

All of these are great posts. The ratio (accepted as the norm) for Mag is; whatever you want your Cal to stay at i.e. 450 ppm X 3. So in your case the Mag should be at 1350 ppm.
