So I went running this morning at 6:00am....

I realized how "unique" this simple running experience was....

Where else at 6:00am is it 85 degrees???

Where else while going for a jog through a suburban area do you run into a live armadillo while on the same jog nearly getting hit by a woman putting on lipstick while driving???

Only in Texas.... stupid, but I thought I'd share....

    I hear ya....

I jog because I couldn't for a long time. Almost exactly 7 years old ago I was laying in a hospital bed. I had fallen from the roof of my wife's martial arts school and broken the left side of my body.... left foot and leg broken in over 100 places... left arm/wrist broken in 7 places.... both kidneys hemmoraging... concussion... etc. etc. etc. Initial prognosis was that they might have to amputate my leg.... but the internal bleeding was the real fear.

I had 5 surgeries in August 2003 trying to put my foot, leg, arm, etc back together. I was in the hospital a month. I was in a wheelchair for 4-5 months...then crutches for 4-5 months... then a cane for several months..... then limp-walking for a long time (roughly a year)...

All told... over 2 years of rehab... all through the rehab, I would talk to myself endlessly about WHY I was doing it.... it hurt like nothing I can describe... I would bite on mouthpieces like you use in football or sports... I bit through 3 of them during rehab it hurt so bad. WHY I was doing it was "to play catch with my son again".... "to run and play chase with my daughter again".

It was the BEST experience of my life. I APPRECIATE being able to jog in stinking heat now. I APPRECIATE being able to stand and wait in long lines at a store or whatever. It totally changed my prespective in life.

Probably MUCH more than you wanted to know... but that is why I was thinking so much on my run this morning... it was a really long journey from the hospital bed. It made everything seem "more crisp" this morning.

I was just thinking.... it has been a long road.

Sorry for the long post... just sharing.

Geesh.. I had forgotten about all your surgeries. It really does make a man appreciate the little things. I have had nothing close to you, but it is still difficult for me to take even a short flight of stairs without my knee screaming at me. But hey, at least I can walk.

I get kind emotional in August each year thinking about it.... real scary to think of how much I almost lost.... REALLY makes you appreciate what you have...

That's why I don't leave my house. Its scary out there. I have my anti-probe kit and tinfoil helmet to keep them out of my head.

Yeah I don't think it was much better here in Sacramento CA as far as heat goes.

Way to go NASA guy I had a long road to being able to walk again myself (at least normally). I just had a complete tear of a ligament in my ankle that took the drs. nearly 6 months to diagnose and then wait for surgery and then 3-4 months of recovery. The initial accident put me in a wheelchair for 3 months since I twisted both ankles very bad. I did appreciate being albe to move and such as I had been riding a bike to the light rail to go to work, did it everyday rain or shine, time to start it again.

Glad to hear that you seem to have completely recovered.
