    Is it possible?

-As we know people are dropping from this hobby like flies! I got my hands on extra stuff real cheap. So my question is this....

If I have an extra filter(like a bio wheel) to put into my tank should I do it or are there negative effects such as over filtration?

There can be overfiltration if you dont want to dose food for your corals. If you have a spare bio wheel lying around put it on without the filter media in the back. This way nothing is mechanical filtered out of the water but the wet dry action of the wheel can still be running. I run a bio wheel like this on every tank I have. Its amazing what those filters can do.

You can not overly biological filter, the bacteria population in your tank will adjust to whatever level of nutrients are in the tank.

However, adding more equipment isn't always a good thing, for example bio wheels can easily become nitrate producers if not maintained well. And if you already have adequate filtration why add one more piece of equipment that you have to maintain?

Thanks you guys answered my question. The reason I asked is because I have all this extra equipment and a 55g tank just sitting in my garage. I will now just us it and run a second tank perhaps for frags?

I really want one, but it would have to stay in the garage and I am not sure it that would work since its not temp controlled?

I agree, why try to fix something that isnt broken. If you have extra equipment, either sell it or keep it for the future, as a back-up. Or offer it to a up-and-coming reefer who is about to start in the hobby.
