I have a lot of bubbles going into my over flow. Big bubbles not micro bubbles or anything, but they cause a problem because water splashes all over the place when the bubbles get to the surface. How can I stop the bubbles or make it so the splashes don't make a mess.

    Would a filter sock help?

Yes a filter sock would help. Is there a bubble in the u tube or is this a drilled overflow?

It is a drilled overflow, I got it in a kit from glass-holes.com. For some reason it has a hole drilled in the elbow coming out of the bulkhead. At first I thought it was acting like a venturi valve, but it doesn't help if I plug it with my finger. I was hoping to find a way to avoid the bubbles without putting a sock on it.

What is the gph rating of your return pump and the gph rating of your overflow. You may have too little flow causing the water to fall to far into the overflow which makes bubbles.

If its large enough, you can try sticking a airline into the hole in the elbow, and run it down a little bit to see if that helps, as sometimes the turbulence that causes the bubbles happens just past the elbow. Oh, and a filter sock will help ;)

What about adding a "T" where its just under the water in the sump then add two small pieces of pvc on both sides of the "T" with holes to dispurse(sp) the flow better...

It might be too much flow, when I switched to a smaller return pump all of the bubbles from my plumbing stopped.

Keep in mind if you use a filter sock you will need to clean it/swap it out regularly so it doesn't trap a ton of detritus.

Well I tried building a contraption out of PVC to catch the bubbles. It helped a lot, bubbles are still escaping but they are smaller and fewer.
