I have an experiment you could try. I have no clue of the outcome because I don't have a drilled tank but this is my theory. You know how a gas can has a large tube that the gas flows through and then a smaller tube in the big one for air, so that you can tip the can all the way up and gurgling is limited. Try this... take a long piece of airline tubeing and run it down the standpipe or bulkhead all the way into the sump and make sure that the airline is not submerged in the sump (to allow air to flow freely). It would be neat to see how that would work. Like I said, just a theory based on a gas can's primitive technology.

I like the idea of a tube/valve/silencer...Sounds like my weekend project...Since I have to re-adjust any way...

I was referring to the water level inside of my weir where the standpipe resides, not the DT. DT water level never fluctuates.

ok no glue....i kinda didnt think so when i thought about it...plus there is no pressure on it like the supply lines from the pump....obviously when I do those over I will glue them.

I am not looking to control any water levels with this...just trying to reduce some noise in the overflows since there is basically no standpipe...2-3'' now and the water is falling like 20+ inches making a lot of noise.

It still should not vary, if it does you are getting a flushing action which should not be. The level in the box should be constant too. Its air locking and burping if the level is changing.

Another quick question....what hieight should the T be at and the 90 coming out of it.
And then what height or where should the cap be?

In short, the horizontal leg of the tee with the 90 should be set to the level you want to maintain the water level in your over flow at...Otty is probably responding with the link to the PVC Repair couplings which are adjustable.

Based on his recommendation I installed these and have found them to be of great value in fine tuning the level in the overflow....I like to have about 1" of fall into the overflow as that has worked well to keep the surface of the tank "skimmed" with out any appreciable noise increase....as opposed to raising them up so there is little or no fall of water into the overflow before entering the standpipes...

    HELP....!!!
I just put my standpipes in and one side is perfect, but the other side keeps fluctuating the water level in the over flow and making a big gurgling noise.

I made them both the exact same, they are both going into separate sumps on the bottom which are connected to each other to keep the water levels the same in each sump.

each sump has a Rio 3100 return pump.

What is causing one side to do this???

I tried to reem the hole a little and it didnt help!!!

    Thanks!

Sounds to me like you are headed for disaster with two overflows, two sumps and two returns, you will never ever get things balanced out. No two pumps or piping arrangements are ever exactly the same and one will always outrun the other causing the flushing action you are seeing.
Two overflows are common but its usually one sump and one return pump.

    Damn....I am moving to a 1 sump system too...soon.
I have to pickup a sump first.
I have an Iwaki 100 waiting to go in, a new protien skimmer, ETSS 500....just need a sump.

What size do you recommend for a 135 gallon tank.

I have an All Glass Aquarium Mega Flow Model 3 on one side....will that one be good enough for the whole tank you think or do I need a bigger one?

    Thanks!
