I've had both and lost siphon on both. Originally i had an eshopps, then went to cpr, and now i'm back to another eshopps.

ive almost lost syphon but that was because my sump ran too low and was squirting lots of micro bubbles, the aqualifter couldn't keep up. But even then, I didnt have a flood. I like it, just wish my tank was drilled lol

i used a CPR for years. they work great provided you keep that pump in good shape. if you do go that route, make sure you use black tubing on the pump to keep it from clogging with algae.

eShopps PF-300 overflow for me and it's never failed in over 2+ years (and zero maintenance on my part). In my opinion, if you need a pump to keep air out of the top of a weir, that tells me the design is flawed from the get go. Seems to me a properly engineered and sized overflow doesn't need any help in functioning. If you really want as close to foolproof as possible, go drilled.

Either drill or go with a standard u-tube. if the pump fails, you're doomed in due time. If you keep the u-tube moving fast you won't have any bubble buildup because the speed of the water pushes it all through. Eshopps are nice, I went and bought the Lifereef model because I had some extra cash. It's stupid how easy and dependable that overflow box is.

Now saying this, I hope I didn't smite myself coming home to a wet floor :p

But really, if the pump fails (which they all do at some point) you might have a problem. If you can drill, do that! If not, I would recommend the lowest possible failure scenario.

Oh ya, get a clear tube just in case you need to clean gunk out of it. Yes it will have algae if it's clear, but my problem isn't the algae, it's the june bugs :)
