I had recently lost all my fish to what I thought was velvet. Can Paracitic Pods harm or kill fish? And where do they come from. I have store bought crushed coral substtrate and dry rock and have only added fish and a feather duster and a cuc. Every morning for a few hours my tank is littered with a type of pod. They are all throughout the water and sticking on the glass then by 9 am there gone....I have added nothing that would have copopods or any other type of pod. BUt I have them. Could they have been what killed the fish instead of velvet.? If so how can I get rid of them...I just read a thread about bad pods and got curious....I am new and dont know zip about pods except fih eat em...Just curious and learning thnx....

It is possible that they are parasitic pods but more than likely they are just Herpactacoid Copepods which are good and non parasistic. Of the hundreds of different copepods, only 3 are non parasitic.

What can I do to find out? Or is there no way?

You can go to your local university and contact a Professor of Marine Biology. You can take some pictures of the pods in Macro mode and post them here. You can try various searches on google. Just remember that some information posted on these reef sites is not accepted, as accurate, or is upto date as true scientific data.
