I have been reading that most reefers use a Phosban Reactor. What is the main purpose and benefits of having one?

Makes for a very efficient way to run your chemical filtration.
Carbon and Phosphate remover are the two most common things put in them.

    +1 on above
a reactor helps to keep the chemical media (primarily GFO and Carbon in seperate reactors) from packing to tightly, this exposses more surface area to the water being treated and increases both the effective life and the efficiency of these media

Hi I'm getting the phosban reactor tomorrow and was wondering does carbon remove phosphates or should I run some media made too remove phosphates?

Carbon will not do anything significant for phosphates; you need GFO for that.

I run GFO non-stop in a 150 reactor, but only run carbon in a media bag for 3-4 days a month (only to remove toxins).

If you decide to buy a reactor, look in to the NextReef MR1 and NextReef Shorty MR1. They make great reactors that do not leak. The TLF start to leak when there is to much water being forced through it. I have had my 900GPH pump hooked up to my MR1 reactor with the valve completely open with no leaking. They are worth the extra money.

That shouldn't be an issue with GFO. Perhaps with carbon, as you want a higher flow, but if you are running that much flow through GFO, your flow rate is too high. GFO works best at 15-20 GPH.
