I have probably 3 pistol shrimp in my tank 1 big red one and 2 smaller ones with out much color . I'm sure they took care of my 3 peperment shrimp and a few crabs and snails . They are fun to listen to and in the morning when they chase the starfish away from there areas is neat . I'm in the process of changing tanks would it be in my best interest to try and keep them out of my new DT . I would like to have some fancy shrimp that dont hide most of the time but I do like all the noise the pistols make and people that come into the house can't believe how loud they are . Is there any other drawl backs to pistol shrimp ?

Do these things show themselfs. I have the dissapearing snail thing going on and they are ending up in piles and I keep hearing a sound like a loud snap. I cant see the shrimp but they sound the part. Not trying to hijaack just asking if you see yours and do they go after your snails? I have not seen one or even know how big they are or even what they look like. I have bought lr 5 or 6 times and wondering if its a hitch hiker.

My kidnaps snails...but never kills them. Or he used to anyways until he paired up with a goby. However, I believe ours was the culprit for a pep shrimp disappearance. Ours is a tiger pistol and he shares his tank with a serpent starfish and Skunk cleaner shrimp with no problems what so ever.

They are only seen when they are chasing something out of there territory or I move some frags around they are under .The big red one can be seen in the morning sometimes chasing the serpent stars around he will snap at them and grab them by the legs untill they get out of his area but you don't see them much .Mine came as hitch hikers on my rock . I have found plenty of empty shells so I think mine is eating some snails and blue leg hermits .

I never get to see mine during the day, I only hear their clicks. I have also seen three in there, but mine are all pale in colour. Maybe u have a mantis shrimp! they click aswell, and only come out in the day, and sleep at night... I want a mantis shrimp!

We NEVER saw ours, even though we bought him, until he got paired up with a goby. We'd only see the results of his bulldozing at night, and he might pop halfway out of a rock at feeding time. But now, he's out a good bit. We've still gone for a full day without seeing him before though, but that was when he and his goby found a place in the middle of the rockwork, I assume.

I have seen mine several times they dont come out much just when they are chasing something out of there area . Thats kind of why I'm thinking about getting rid of them . Sound neat but not much of a show . Wish I still had the pepermints or another kind that didnt hide all the time

My peppermints hide all the time. I have two and I rarely see them. Rarely they will come out during feeding time. I see my skunk cleaner often though he is out everyday at his cleaning station.

I used to have a big tiger pistol, him and the randall were best buds. I loved watching these guys go to work. They really are powerhouses. Little bastad would take my corals if they ever fell on the sand. The only problem I ever heard about them is they could loosen the sand under your rocks and they could fall, but I've never heard of that ever happen.

If you have your rocks resting on the glass bottom instead of resting on your sand, and they are in a good, stable aquascape, that won't happen. My guys have probably dug in every possible spot in the tank, and everything's rock solid in place.

Skunk cleaners are great if you want a shrimp to be out in the open. My cleans my hand every time it's in the water...EVERY time.
