I know a lot of rift lake hobbyists use play sand as a substrate in their aquariums and it doesn't affect the water too much, maybe raise it a little.

I was wondering if I could use that for my nano tank? Has anyone tried it or thought it would work?

From what ever source you choose to get it...obtain a sample, rinse it and test it for Silica and Phosphate...these are often leached from play sand and contribute to algae problems. A quick search of the forums will give you much to read from previous discussions...

The other issue with using play sand is that you give up the benefit of buffering your chemistry when you choose not to use an aragonite based substrate.

also silica based sand is considered to have too sharp of edges that can harm tank inhabitants that bury themselves or dig in it.
