the feather duster will shed its crown when reproducing so that it wont "eat" its young... however i doubt that is the case here. the stringy things are vermented snails and they can get annoying to corals eventually. if you want to stop them just put a drop of glue over the tube that the web comes out. but back to the feather duster, i would say it either shed to make a crown that is better for filtering your tank or else its not doing too hot and is starving.

we have had the worm featherduster for about 3 months and it seemed as if was diong great..the crown seemed to get bigger and bigger and the tube standing taller and taller...and i have never had the string y stuff before tho.. and the string aisnt attached to anything no point of orgin..gets sucked into the filter or gets hung up on rocks...thats why i dont think it a snail...do the snails just appear..we havent added anything in a t least 2 months

the snails are just a tube with a hole at the end. the strings can detatch and float around. the picture looks just like their web and im almost positive that is what it is
phyto=phytoplankton. you can go out and buy live phytoplankton (made by DT) or else use something like marine snow which is basically "fake" phytoplankton. If you have access to rods food i would recommend buying that because it feeds fish, corals, inverts, featherdusters, and everything else you can think of
