I'm pretty sure my fish has pop-eye. All of my parameters are normal. How should I go about fixing the problem? I feel so bad for the fish

    Hi Paro6k

I had a blue trigger with what I believe was popeye, eye swelled up and went milky white

I did not medicate , I improved water conditions by adding carbon to my system and that was all I did

the fish no longer has this infection and is fine
I had read that "if the fish is otherwise healthy they can overcome this problem"

But I only have the one, single experience of this issue so others may advise better

Popeye is more of a condition than a disease state. Most often it is an irritation. Fish scrapes the eye on a rock, it swells up, then gets better. Just keep the params good and things will improve. If the problem is bilateral (both eyes), then you can begin suspecting a bacterial cause. In this case, I would treat with food dipped in Melafix and garlic.

As for the fish, most come through with flying colors. If the inflammation is too much, the optic nerve may become choked off and the fish will end up blind in that eye. It doesn't happen that often, so I wouldn't worry about it. I am just throwing it out there.

Garlic is one of the few additives that you can use with barely a second thought. It's good for almost everything in the tank's immune system. When in doubt treat the food with it. You won't hurt anything, and I am a confessed dosing nazi.

Most of the time it will clear on its own--Good advice above. If they do lose the eye, they still can live a pretty normal life. just will have some depth perception issues. If it gets really bad, you can quarentine to hospital tank and treat with myacin-2. Do this as a last resort. (Life or death). as this is stressful on the fish.

Pop eye is related to oxygen deprivation; not a disease, but yes, a condition. Causes for oxygen deprivation could be due to supersaturated gases in the water.
