I was wondering if anyone has or has had a Popeye Catalufa Soldierfish & their opinions/experiences with it?

    Thanks!

I was interested in getting a soldierfish awhile ago, and read that they are very cryptic, mostly nocturnal, difficult to keep and not always reef safe. So I decided against it. I want a fish that will be out during the day!

Yeah I've read they are difficult to keep, they are super interesting looking though. They kinda remind me of the deep water anglers with the draw bridge mouth.

Haven't really seen much personal info on them online so wondering if anyone on 3reef has any exp with one.

Yeah, my main issue was the nocturnal thing. But some people like nocturnal fish! Not me. I want to see my money out there swimming around! Lol

yeah I agree I like fish that are in the water column, but it would be kinda cool to have it come out with the inverts that are nocturnal. Hopefully someone will chime in with some hands-on opinions.

I have not tried to keep one of these, but I do know that big mouth = fish eating capability.

Soldier fish are not reef safe because they can eat smaller reef fish.

You know, Banggai Cardinals (a fish that seems to have evolved similar characteristics as soldierfish) are pretty well nocturnal too. The thing is, they swim around a bit during the day, usually in the darker spots or when they see food. But then at night, they come out and swim like crazy. Mine is almost as fast and as swims as much as a tang at night.

So, it may just be an issue of providing a somewhat shaded area in the tank with low flow, and it would be out during the day.
