got a new powder brown last night, put him in turned off the lights and called it a night. woke up today looked in the tank (without the lights on) and he was swimming around and seemed like he was comffy already.
turned on the ligts and now hes swimming back and fourth very fast like hes scared and hes making my other fish stress out there all hiding behind the rocks.
should i turn back off the lights or what?
    thanks, david

My luck with powder brown's is that they need TONS of SWIMMING room... if i am reading correctly and you have it in a 55gal... I am sorry its to small... Your gonna need a 75 gal + tank... A longer tank foot print the better for more ideal swimming... From the fish swimming back and forth all crazy like it's a lil stressed out..

Keep in mind just my Crusty $.02

    Best of Luck...

must just be lazy powder brown in the 39gal.. lol... I have heard of they jumping tanks because they are in a small tank... Pending the size of the fish when you buy them you "may" get away with them in a smaller tank but as they grow you need to upgrade the tank...

With the purchase of Tang's or the Surgeon family of fish i alway try and buy them when they are the smallest. This way as soon as you introduce them to your tank they are already are not over sized for the tank...

    ONce again... just my $.02

    Best of luck...

I would not keep a powder brown in a 55. There are a few tangs you can keep in a 55 when they are small, but a powder brown is not one of them IMO. If your friend has one in a 39, I feel real bad for that fish.

My powder brown does the same stuff at night . . . its really cool to watch him playing in the powerheads. After lights are on its back to normal . . . mine is very active in general and uses all of my 125.

Do you turn all your lights on at once, or do you stager them for a dawn / dusk approach? Also, if he is going nuts in the tank, might not be a bad idea to check for any stray current / voltage in your water.

Generally speaking Tangs absolute minimum tank size is 75G
I really wouldn't keep one in anything smaller

Just leave the lights off for a couple of days thats what I did when i got my Hippo which was stressed out and it worked. Let him get used to the tank and what not and slowing put on the blue lights for a day then the regular lights. your coral will be fine if you have any!
