Hi there, I have installed the proclear wetdry 150 filter for my 55g saltwater tank now for 1 month. The tank is 7 months running with the emperor 400 which i will take away this week. Can someone tell me why the prefilter box gets brown and should i worry about this? the skimmer is working great that also came with the filter

if you mean the plastic housing

the pre filter box is relatively new and plastic and as such will probably have diatoms colonising it - once the silicates held and released by the plastics are used up, then this will stop occuring ( it will look clean again)

if you mean what is in the pre filter box - as in sponge or something else

these get brown as they trap the waste that gets pulled into the filter- and they need to be rinsed periodically in old tank water , when you do water changes , otherwise left dirty they contribute to nitrate levels in your tank

Hope I understood the question and that one or other of my answers is helpfull

i was actually refering to the skimmer box that is the actual tank and the U tube that goes from the skimmer box to the prefilter box behind the tank.

if i am thinking of the part you are speaking those will get an algea build up over time and require cleaning. think of you glass in the tank it reuires constant cleaning and that part is no different.

i did put it back, why was it a bad idea. Also I did a 10gl water change today using RO water but my skimmer is skimming clear and not dark stuff, is that okay?

did you only use R/0 because if you did you just really lowered your SG. I hope you meant R/O mixed with salt.
