I'd first put something in like a goby. A clown is in the swimming space of a puffer more and might nip at him which could provoke him into biting back.

True. Plus clowns can be jerks too.
A goby is a good choice to test the waters :D

sounds good! After two years, I would like to be able to look at something else in my tank! haha (not saying that GSP's are not fun to watch though)

Gobies and clownfish as tankmates for a green spotted puffer? Sounds more like food to me. These fish spend their entire lives "nibbling" on things whether they are hungry or not. Their beaks require this constant nibbling to keep the size in check; and can eventually become a health issue/concern. Point is, they are well known for being fin "nipping" little buggers with boisterous personalities. They can grow fairly large compared to their usual store size.

These things look really nice in marine tanks, but you are going to have to look a little harder for a compatible tank mate(s). When I managed a pet store, they were to be kept in tanks with other gsp's.

A clownfish and a goby(that doesn't have considerable speed), are going to be pestered constantly.

You may want to keep with larger more aggressive species of fish...
And that is besides any inverts that will likely become food.

Cool looking fish with lot's of personality, but really annoying to watch them chase everything down, all day, every day.

But that has just been my experience with them, they were never allowed to come home with me...

Gobies aren't something I would put in with a puffer.

Clownfish, on the other hand, can be in with a puffer. I've seen videos of clownfish beating the bejesus out of puffers. I imagine that if the clown is established and a puffer gets tossed in, it'll have no problems.

yeah I have had some luck with keeping hermits but snails not so much. I feed them some small snails every week or so but they like to nibble on the rock most of the time. This nipping is why i am so hesitant to put anything other than food in the tank. One is about 2.5 inches and the other is about 4. How large of a fish do you recommend? If I do get something I will for sure let it get settled before adding the puffers.
