    Big up to Trinidad.;D

you can attach the venturi inlet of a power head to the barb, using the hose. this would start the siphon and maintain it. it would also ensure that it restarts after a power outage. it would also remove air bubbles.

    250gph is good, altough, I'd recommend a 350gph-400gph.

Yep. I have one made with 1/2" PVC and another made with 3/4" the return pump that I had on the 3/4" was a 400gph.
You can use a smaller pump like the 250gph you mentioned but I just always prefer more water circulation.

ok. i just didn't want a to powerful pump that would return more than the overflow could handle. it think i'll go with a 300/400 with a valve on the return.
did you use regular PVC glue, or is there something special that is reef safe?

I just did my plumbing with pvc glue, Everything is fine. (Plus I had done it in the past) I would say give it about 30 mins to dry.

I finished building this overflow but i haven't set it up yet. i tested it out on a spare tank and it seems to be working. Here are some pics.

    I couldn't find a barb so I used a air line hose connector. ( Thanks Siddique )

I used an end cap and drilled holes in it and the piece of the pipe that will be under the water level. This should create a skimming effect and prevent fish from getting into the overflow.
