So I setup a QT tank(30gal) about a week and a half ago and have some old base rock and some LS from my DT in tupperware containers for a wrasse I had picked up over the weekend. Had done a quick check on params Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate(before purchasing a fish) all checked out as zero as suspected so I bought the wrasse fully expecting I was going to be doing crazy amounts water changes. Added the wrasse on Saturday and did a check on ammonia and nitrite about an hour ago and sure enough I have .25 ammonia (no nitrite) so did a quick 10 gal change (had made up some water 2 days ago in expectation of this).

Have 10 more gal running also and making more ro/di at the moment.

Ok long intro to simple question for those experienced out there.

I was wondering if I should stick with the fresh mix or would there be any benefit or detriment to using water from my DT (just clean siphon from the middle water column)?

Then I could kill 2 birds by putting clean water into my DT and use the DT water to balance out the QT?? I know probably a totally stupid idea but at least I am asking before doing.

    Sounds like a plan.

Does not sound stupid in the least unless I am missing something.

The DT has fish in it, were they quarantined? If so then I do not see an issue.

All the fish I have in the DT I have had for well over a year so all good on that.

The Blue Star leopard wrasse has been eating like a champ on brine, and SA hatchery diet pellets.
I have been feeding during the morning and at night.

I would probably just use new water but I don't see a problem using dt water if need be.;)

Well I am just trying to get the best bang for the buck you could say. I know that I am going to have to do the water changes on the QT it just seems that I am in a way throwing money out the window buy using the fresh mix on the QT which requires the more frequent WC.

Also was thinking there could be some benefit to using the DT water(not a marine biologist so have no idea) in the QT which should assist with acclimation to the to the DT when the time comes.

Also need to do a 25gal WC on the DT this weekend so figured if it is beneficial to the QT I would need to make up less mix.

Also I am going to be picking up 4 Anthias from my LFS this weekend(they have been in their QT system for a couple weeks) and will put into mine for another couple so now I will be looking at increased water changes possible daily.

    Anyways thanks for you input...

Wonder what others do???? Someone must have thought of this/do it? Don't think I have ever had an original thought when it comes to this hobby.

I normally get all my fish in QT before they go to the DT and I treat them all with cupramine, so I feel good about using the DT water for QT water changes... The only issue you might want to check is that normally when you do water changes from you DT you are always siphoning some of the crap out of the tank so any ammonia or other stuff that you might have in your tank you are exporting into your qt tank that doesnt have a very robust filtration system.. so I guess what I wanted to say with all this rambling is that if you are having a spike of nitrite, nitrate or ammonia in your qt it might be best to use clean fresh water you made to deal with that issue...
also you can buy some of the less expensive salts for your QT tank and keep the good salt for your reef :)

Thanks for the reply and and some food for thought there. Will have to consider using instant ocean not the reef crystals for the QT.

    So just an update.

Decided to go with the fresh mix WC on the on the 135DT (20gal) and took the water from the DT and did 20gal WC on my QT.

DT water did have < .05 nitrate level but figured this was better than having .25 ammonia in the QT.

QT testing looks like it is going to be an everyday thing for the next couple weeks

Blue Star Leopard wrasse still seems happier than a clam and eating 2 times a day.

People do it both ways; there's different schools of thought as to which way is better, but either works.

I've done it both ways and don't have much preference.
