So Currently I am running a 120g Tank and it has about a 1.5 - 2 inch sand bed. I was hoping to add more sand.. probalby another 30-40 lbs. My question is, How do i go about this without making a sand storm mess and freaking out my inhabitants?

its pretty hard not to make a sandstorm. Ive added sand but it will still cloud up. I turn off all PH's and return pump. let the water settle. Use a funnel on a piece of 1"pvc pipe. put the pipe at the bottom of the tank and poor the sand in. It is minimized this way but still clouds up some.

try turning off your power heads and plug in all the protein skimmers you got. and do it at night so it wont be cloudy all day soaking up your lights

Hmmm Ok, Do you think rinsing the sand then putting it in a measuring cup then placing it in the water covered and basicly kinda like making a sand castle but under water, do you think that would possibly reduce the cloudyness?

regardless, do you guys think i should do the 30-40 lbs all at once, or say 10 lbs a day? or less?

Might work? I would say try it and see how it does. if there is any type of dust it will probably still cloud up some. JMO

i would just put 20 lbs of live sand out of the bag in the tank and see how it looks and test your water too see if you should add sand or take sand out. Nitrates and sulfates if you can get sulfate test
try to keep pieces of plastic out of the tank from tearing the bag of sand

Try putting the sand in a 5 gallon bucket and then mixing it around then siphoning the cloudy water out. You can use freshwater for this so that you dont spend any money on salt. Do this over a couple of days. Since your not adding it all at once it should help keep the cloudyness down. Then make sure you have a skimmer on and empty the cup often.

    Thanks for the input!

Mother had an idea, she told me to throw the sand in a bucket, fill it with water stir it, drain it, then put it in a plastic bag, and then cut a small hole, take my algae clip and clip it, put it in the tank, remove the clip and squeeze it out. kinda like frosting a cake...
