So my sump wall cracked last week and i'm about to replace it with a new piece of glass, my question is what cleaner can I use to remove the residue left by the old silicone on the glass edges before I reseal them?

I'm thinking a bit of nail polish remover would do the trick but I want to be sure it wont poison the sump when I refill it.

The only thing that will take silicone off is a strong acid (think hydrochloric). Your best bet here is a single edged razor. If it's glass it should be very easy to take off.

edit: when I say "only thing" i mean "only liquid removal product".

Have you tried a razor blade?

yes, all the edges have been scraped as clean as I can with several razor blades but there is just that last bit of residue the blade wont scrape. I can probably just leave it there without an issue, just dont want to have to do this again till after I find a Job and can just buy a New tank instead :p

isopropyl alcohol will to some extent... its also good to use before siliconing because it cleans the surface. and if you dip your finger in alcohol before you run the joint it will make it a little neater and not stick all over your finger
