Quiet Overflow/Sump???

OK the 40g breeder I'm getting ready to set up will be my first tank with a sump, I bought the tank off a guy from a local fish forum. it has a 4X8 weir in the back left corner of the tank, right now it has 1 drain with a durso standpipe, I know this isn't going to be silent.

From the pics do you think I have enough room to drill for another drain? or are there any other ideas for making the sump/overflow silent?

I should add that there's no spot on my stand for me to run plumbing from the bottom.

 

Looks to me like there is plenty of room in there for another bulkhead. I wouldn't think it would hurt to position it up a little.. like at 10:30 in relation the the current one?

Sounds like you already know a Herbie style dual drain would give you a near perfectly silent overflow AND sump drain

 

Yeah, i was just wondering if glass has a tendency to crack if you drill to close to the other hole? and if I drill up too far then the plumbing is gonna have a lot of sway room and might crack the glass.

I'd probably use the original as the drain and the secondary as the emergency.

 

Drilling holes too close to one another will cause the glass to crack.

 

The most noise will probably be the water pouring over the plastic, other than that it should be quiet. No way to keep that part quiet that I know of except turn the music up
