Thanks Matt. Anyway to tell if the pump is an older build? I want to get this project done and it's been one snag after another but at the same time I don't want a bunch of headache either.

Compare the front plate (the part that covers the impeller) on the one you have to the new ones... mine was noticeably different.

I had a QO 4000 and QO 2200 both burn up on me. The 4000 was on a closed loop and electrified my tank causing the chiller to run non stop for who knows how long before I discovered it. Funny, after replacing the QO with an Ocean Runner 3500 I sold my chiller. The QO's run very very hot, when used externally I could not comfortably lay my hand on either one of them so imagine how much heat gets transferred to the water via either the internal water jackets or the extreior surface.
The 2200 was on a calcium reactor and sprung a leak in the motor windings that sprayed out under my stand until I notice my tank was low one day. it was inches from spraying into a outlet strip.

One is a fluke, two is a problem.
Nothing but Ocean Runner or eheim for me today, I have 4 Ocean Runners in my systems now and two are over 7 years old.

The one that I had a problem with was one of the new ones.

I have been running 2 different QO3000 pumps as returns over the last year or so. I used the first one to replace the mag9.5. It provided more flow through the exact same manifold as the mag9, despite having a good 150 gph less than the mag.

They run quiet, cool, and have threaded inlets and exhausts. The mag9 used like 90 watts to the QO3k's 40 watts. It's hard to argue with that, and I have never had restart issues with either QO pump I have used. I have a friend that has used all sizes of QO pumps, and his only complaint is that the really big QO's are not so quiet. Other than that, I would say its a great pump.

    I like them a lot.

I knew AZ would post about his hot running ones, so i measured my QO3k that is run externally. It is just under 100 degrees, like 96 or so. That is more than acceptable, and less than a similar mag would make.

I've been running a QO2200 for about 3 years now on my 20g and do not have a single complaint. I've pulled it out and cleaned it really well maybe twice. I hear absolutley no noise from it, and it runs very cool. I will definitly be using another QO on my 75, probably a 4000. Maybe I just got a good one, but I would strongly recommend them to anybody.
