I saw this factoid on Wheel Of Fortune the other night and thought it was interesting.

Can anyone tell me what is the longest word that can be typed with only the left hand on a QWERTY keyboard? How about with the right hand only?

You don't have to be a sucker for a good plane trip to know the answer!

 

Can you explain the rules better?
I can hit any button on my keyboard using either hand only What if its a phone with qwerty? Those boards are extra small

 

Sure! Generally, if you type as it's taught in school, your left hand is only responsible for the letters Q through T, A through G, and Z through B. The right hand is used only for Y through P, H through :, and N through ?

So if you use the left hand only, there's a word (like deft, for example) you can make. Likewise, using ONLY the right hand, you can make a word like monk.

What's the longest word you can produce with each hand in this fashion? Hint: the left hand word has 10 letters. The right hand only word contains 8.

Heard that one a bit ago. If wheel of fortune went with the plane hint which I assume is stewardesses (12), tesseradecade is a group of 14, and one character longer, and 2 if you make it plural. No idea on right hand

 

Left hand:
reverberate (11 letters)

right hand:
monopoly

well, that was 20 minutes of the most interesting scrabble game I have played! I beat ya on left hand!

 

Good on stewardesses. Never thought to pluralize it. There you have 12 instead of 10 like I said. I've never heard the word tesseradecade, and can't find it on dictionary.com. You got the left hand, Zach! The right hand word is a very common word, and it doesn't suck.

 

Zach beat you with stewardesses. Maybe I missheard Pat Sajak and he said "stewardesses." I heard it as the singular. Good job on monopoly, that's 8 letters, so you have to get credit, although it's not the 8 letter word that Pat gave!

I guess polyphony is a word, it's more than 8 letters, AND it's a right hand only word. I'm never listening to Pat Sajak again!! He's making me look like a moron.
