I was wondering if it would be worth my money to add a gfo reactor to my system. My tank is only a month old, but I do have quite a bit of green hair algae growing. I am sure that it is from the phosphates leeching from my dry rock. Just not sure if it would be a good idea this early in the game. I was looking at getting a brs deluxe reactor to run both gfo and ac. Along with that would be a hanna checker. If I do add a reactor, what is the best plumbing setup? Should I put the pump in stage 1 of my sump and the discharge in the return pump section?

I would run your GFO and carbon in a separate reactor. Your hair algae just might be part of your cycle. If it were me I'd run one as I am planning on my build.

I just setup my reactor today in my 3 week old 55gal, but I did not turn it on yet. I don't see a reason to until my live rock is cured. For plumbing, that is a good setup (pump in intake section of sump, discharge in return section).

If you have algae, then yes I believe you should run GFO in a reactor.

+1 on everyone else, who has indicated now being a good time to add the reactor/ GFO

my preference is to be managing the problem before it arises, or gets out of hand

Thanks everyone. I will get one on order and get it setup. Do not want the algae to get out of hand. Should the phosphate level be controlled at zero?

Well I went ahead and ordered a reactor, gfo, and hanna checker from BRS this morning. Should have it in a couple days. Their calculator says I need to use 1.25 cups of gfo and 0.5 cup of ac. Should I start out with half of that and then increase after a couple weeks?
