What are the recommended salinity levels for my aquarium since many hobbyists have different opinions.

    My current setup is:
    55 Gallon tank
    T5 Lightning 46inch (3-Actinic and 3-10,000K white)
    44 Pounds of live rock
    2" fine live sand bed
    70 Gallon capacity protein skimmer
    15w UV light
    Rena SmartFilter 55 (cascade)
    5 stage 4CFM Canister filter

    Livestock:
    1 Blue Tang 2"
1 Sleeper Gold Head Goby 2.5"
    1 Blue Damselfish 1.5"
    1 Xanthurus Cream Angelfish 2.5"

    Invertebrates:
    5 Hermit Crabs
    4 Nassarius snails
    1 Yellow Condy Anemone
    1 Scarlet Skunk Cleaner Shrimp
    1 Peppermint Shrimp
20 Button Polyps Yellow and Purple (growing and spreading fast)
1 Rock like 2" wide x 5" Long with Green Starburst Polyps

    Nitrate 0 ppm
    Ammonia 0 ppm
    Nitrite 0 ppm
    PH 8.2

20% Water change every 21 days (tank has been setup and running for over 7 months)

My current Salinity is now 1.0245 I measure it with a calibrated American Marine Pinpoint Salinity Monitor.

The problem is that my Button Polyps all of the sudden started to look like they no longer stretch their tentacles anymore and my question is if i should raise the Salinity?

    Thanks in advance.

I keep mine at 1.025. I don't think that your salinity is affecting your button polyps. I do notice that you didn't supply the following parameters that need to be maintained for reef.
Calcium, alkalinity and, magnesium. Do you have kits for these?

I agree, salinity in this situation is most likely not to blame. When you say tentacles, you mean the ones around the oral disc?
How long have you had the cream angel?
I would bet with high certainty he is to blame. Keep a close eye on him and more than likely he is to blame. I have also seen peppermint shrimp nibble on polyps as well so watch them, problem is they will most likely do it at night.

Post the specs mission asked for and we can see if it is something else but until then I vote for predation!

    Happy reefing!

thx Dr.Fragenstein here are my water parameters:

    Calcium (Ca²) 440 ppm
    Alkalinity (KH) 196.9 °dKH 11
Magnesium -> i don't have anything to test this parameter
    Phosphate (Po4) 1.0 ppm

    thanks.

BTW can someone please tell me what salinity level shoudl i use for my aquarium anyway?

    Seems most places recommend 1.023-1.025

Salinity readings around 1.022-1.026 are fine. Having these readings deviate from this range is not very critical as long as it is done slowly. I do know that as salinity increases, the amount of dissolved oxygen decreases!
