    Hello,
I am new to this site and new to saltwater tanks. I have a 29gal tank with 14lbs of live rock and live sand also. I put a red spotted blenny in about 3 days ago and he doesnt seem as active as he was in the store. I dont think he is eating the bloodworms that I am feeding, so I went out and bought seaweed paper last night with a clip and dropped it down to the bottom of the tank. I havent seen him take to it and I even put it right in front of him. Any other ideas? I would hate to see it die, but it just doesnt look good from what I can tell (I am no expert). He chills in the corner alot and kinda burys himself in the sand 1/2 way. The only other fish in there is a bicolor pseudo so I'm not sure what to do

    Bleenies can be tricky

    HI,
My first blenny was a scooter I was very new and didn't know they only may eat live pods, my tanks was very new so it was pretty sterile so he starved to death.
My new Blenny is the Lawnmower variety he eats flake algae, and loves to bite rocks that have algae (thats why I bought him) he was pale and lazy whenI got him he's darker and much larger and loves to fight with the blenny in the glass all day its a hoot.
I would ask the LFS were you bought him what was the tank conditions have your water checked and what were they feeding I ve seen may stores inject live brine shrimp this spoils the animals for flake and other foods.

I actually asked the owner and she said to try to seaweed paper. She siad they fed them seaweed paper and some type of frozen shrimp stuff. Hardly any bloodworms get to the bottom because the pseudo eats them all and they float alot.

I had my water tested while I was there also, and salinity was perfect and everything was perfect except for posphates.. which is why I currently have an algae bloom on my sand and rock. The algae was also the reason I purchased the blenny because I was under the impression they ate algae. The tank is about 2 1/2 weeks old and everything seems fine.. its weird.

Most blennys are carnivores that require a mature substrate full of pods. Wether it be for a main food source or for occasional grazing. I would do some research on the net to find what specific needs for your blenny. I havent heard of many being omnivores. They are usually either herbivores or carnivores. But they may be oppurtunistic as well, nobody knows for a fact what they will and will not eat. Try some live brine shrimp, should be able to pick them up from the LFS. If that works, try enrishing them with something like spectra vital because there little to none nutrishinal value in brine shrimp.

    sorry

    HI,
I know that feeling of loss, I would let that tank cycle a few weeks before tring anything else , I find in my tanks peppermint shrimp and red hermits tend to act funny when the waters getting alittle off, it helps me know when to do a partial , let that tank cycle the rest of the way, Have you bought any live sand from LFS to seed the tank with small critters and stuff, it helps the process, I ve seeded my tank about 5 times in the last 4 weeks it really speeds up the cycle...
    Doug
most the live sand that you buy in bags may be nearly DOA, the sand they scoop out of their main tanks is loaded with pods and worms, that may be benaficial.
