This has been growing very slowly in one place on a piece of LR. It hasn't spread, and Jwin thinks its kind of cool looking, but I'm wondering if it needs to be disposed of. Anybody know what this is and if its a bad thing to have hanging around?

It's a macro (red obviously) could be a Botryocladia sp. (red grape kelp, or similar species). Not sure on the exact species, but I would say im 85% sure on the genus. It's a nice macro and you can dose Iron & Magnesium (and possibly calcium to help it grow) to keep it healthy. It will work as a nice nutrient export but might get eaten by your fish.

Thanks! It seems pretty healthy. I do catch the cleaner shrimp and the coral beauty picking at it on occasion.

Lucky! I like the looks of that and wouldn't mind some of that in my tank - although I am pretty sure my yellow tang would decimate it.

Yeah, it wouldnt last long in a tank with Tangs. Macros add something different/nice to reef tanks that you normally dont see much of.
