It would seem so. From the link provided:

"....We had a breach in our security systems, allowing easy access [by a hacker] to our very important files and database. Most of these items were either corrupted or completely deleted. We made the mistake of placing our back ups on the same server as which we operated the site on (yes, we know, a HUGE mistake)."

They were backing up their database on the same server that the site was running. BIG MISTAKE. You can kiss that data goodbye. I to have learned not to do this the hard way.

Read some of the posts on that link. The rumor mills and conspiracy theorists are having a freakin field day with this one

It really is a shame if they have lost all of that information. Regardless of the "interesting mix" of people on that site, a lot of really important and helpful information is lost if it really is gone for good.

I woke up to the smell of burning egos and the subtle scent of lawsuits wafting through the air... now i know where it was coming from. I thought a car club had gone up in flames, but now I see it's something of a much soggier nature.

So this is kind of sad, but I was never hugely impressed with RC to begin with. All the info they had was scattered and impossible to search. The main loss I feel is that our local reef club used it for discussing meetings and such.

... So is 3reef ready for an influx of new members from the RC diaspora? How's that Database? Backups on a drive in a firesafe? Reputable host, or is this site running from someones living room or cubicle? At least one professional IT guru on staff?

...hard to believe that RC was being run by someone who was so clueless as to allow something like that to happen, but whatever.... this has and will be my home base for all digital fish related matters as long as it's around :)

Our reef club was based on R/C too but luckily, there is a forum on the club's website so members aren't at a complete loss.

I suspect that a lot of the "smaller" hobbiest sites will be seeing a huge increase in membership. But again, a lot of Reef Central folks are already members of several different forums so we may not notice anything at all.

P.S.: Just a quick note to nobody in particular: Let's not turn this into a Reef Central bad mouthing thread or it will be shut down.

I was just thinking the same thing. Matt, it may be time to double check that server capacity. Something tells me you will see a influx of bandwidth in the immediate future.

You would think that would be a no brainer?

It wouldn't be the first site hacked out of existence or completely taken over, but with as long as RC has been around, you would have thought they knew better.

As horrible as it is to have a simple hack ruin a huge site, whomever the admin is thta did the actual placing of the backup on the main server should feel horrible for not thinking of moving it elsewhere.

    Quote from the homepage:
    "Hello RC Members.

Sorry for the interruption. We'll be back in a little while, I need to check something.

To the folks spreading rumors and making up quotes, it's pretty sad when you have to resort to lying to try and get members.
Slander and libel are pretty serious things.
    Cheers"

Seems this might just be rumor.
