my 55 gallon reef is getting a little boring. i have a royal gramma, yellow tail damsel, clownfish, and a six line wrasse. basically 4 small rock dwelling fish. i want one nice show fish in the tank. i really like yellow tangs and longnose butterfly's. what would be the best option?

You definitely need more variety! Most people will jump and say that you can't put a yellow tang in a 55. Although they're probably right..I would say that if you didn't add any more fish one would be fine. You may end up having to trade it in when it reaches full size though. Have you looked into more wrasses? I had a Halichoeres melanurus and a Halichoeres chrysus in my 40 and they were always out front cruising around. The H. chrysus has the same bright yellow as the yellow tang. They both get a pretty good size, too. I would ditch the damsel and the gramma either way.

imo a kole tang would be ok in that thank and if you want to add even more life i would put in some wrasses

    lepored wrasse
    mystery wrasse

they move around alot and add alot of life and color to the tank

A yellow tang will be fine in a 55g assuming its a 4' tank for a longer time, but eventually youll want to trade it in or sell it.

Most larger fish that get 5-8" need larger tanks long term. Have you thought of doing a schooling fish such as a chromis, or a pair/tio of flasher wrasses. It would bring activity to the reef thats for sure.

What about a dwarf angel? Mine is extremely active and brightly colored. Definitely my show fish!
