I'm starting up my 55g and I want to keep some soft corals.. I'm wondering what lighting I should get to save money. I'm guessing it would be T5 but what Brand is the best value?

you have to some structure above the tank to screw them into most people build a canopy, some just put a few 2x4's above theres.

If your tank is 48", do u always need a 48" light fixture?

This fixture is considered a good entry level T5 fixture. It is what I used on my 55 and now my 120. It is not one of the high-end ones with the high-end price tags, but its is a solid fixture. I would recommend it.

FS Aquatics also has this same fixture(or a very similar one) for $50 less.

    The 48" 4x54w(216 total) slr T5HO

Not trying to bash Aquacave though...their prices are just kinda high some times.

4X54W will be more than enough for softies and will allow you to add LPS and SPS in the future.
