One gallon of evaporation is normal. I get that with my 46.

Yes, watch the grade of SS. 316 is a nice food safe and non rusting SS. Cheaper grades will have iron in it, and they will rust.

Take a magnet to any SS you find, ad if it sticks to it, then it is not the best grade of SS.

From a chemistry standpoint, If you go with anything above 20 karat gold, you should be good.

What I was thinking. Gold, Platinum, titanium, anything that's not reactive.

LOL I've seen that DIY plan. If you google diy chillers you'll find it on ask.com It brought that guys nano down a degree or two plus gave him a place for his six pack.

After a few months I can easily see this costing more than a real chiller with the inefficiencies of the heat transfer in a cobbled situation. Plus you can't really control you're tank temperature in an open loop fashion like with a real chiller.

Keep an eye on Craigslist, I just got a 1/5th HP JBJ Arctica for $300 brand new (but sitting in a garage for a year or so)... they're out there and if you can get one for half off, that's the way to go.

titanium is what most people end up using. ive got a 1/4HP aqua logic for sale but its probably out of your price range if youre thinking DIY..

Magnesium, Iron, Strontium, Molybdenum are a few I can think of off the top of my head that would be generally considered "reef safe"... ;)

Everyone always thinks they can make the better DIY mini-fridge chiller. If it could be done efficiently and effectively so many more people would be doing it. Save yourself some trouble, save yourself some money, and just buy a chiller. You can pick them up for cheap used. Even if you get the mini-fridge working (not impossible) you need a way of controlling it. On top of that, the electricity waste alone is ridiculous. Buy a chiller, or even use some fans to help cool your tank.
