What kind of lights do you have, how long are you running them, and how close are they to the water surface? Also, what is the ambient room temperature where the tank is? Shutting down a powerhead would probably increase the temp, as it reduces the water flow.

I too have read that running a powerhead can cause an increase in temp...however it does seem quite sensible if the lack of circulation can cause a rise in temp. But if you have at least one running there is still some type of circulation...Is this right guys correct me if I'm wrong.

After adding 2 of the Koralia 1'a in my 40gal, the temp actually lowered about 4 degrees. I would think to get that hot (86) it would have to be sourced from his lighting. The only thing I could think of to suggest would be to run the lights less and/or move them higher (corals permitting).
