I have both chaeto and caulpera in my refuge. They have both been in there for about 2 weeks and are beginning to already fill the tank. Is it ok if they blend with each other? I am thinking that one might take over the other? Any thoughts? Experiences/>?

in my tank the chaeto grows faster than the one piece of caulpera I have. doesn't seem to make a difference as far as helping with the filtration end of it.

one might over take the other but it is survival of the fittest. both make great filtration

Both will work, but personally I would suggest sticking with the chaeto. Only reason, chaeto will not go sexual, while caulpera can go sexual. As far as filtration they both work well, and the one that grows the fasest will be the best at dropping nitrate/phosphate.

Caulpura tends to do a better job at nitrate reduction. However, 24/7 lighting is recommended. Positives and negatives to it. I run both myself and just try to keep them as separated as possible. No particular reason.

I have chateo only and it grows like a weed in my fuge. I have it under a 15w 10k strip light which is on for about 14 hrs...oposite of my DT lights to help with the PH swings. I have heard and read that caulerpa will overtake the chateo once it gets going. IMO chateo is a better macro algae to breed pods also!!

I had a 2" stow-away strand of caulerpa in my chaeto and it has grown to about 6" the last 2 months. I may pluck it out, but since it's the only strand, I don't know if can do that much harm even if it does die off or germinate.

    Tigermike,

I would not worry about that little of a bit of caulerpa.
