I have a small section in my sump that is my designated refugium area, but I'm not happy with it. My sump design didn't go as planned because vertex changed there design about the same time I was building my tank. So the new vertex wouldn't fit where I wanted and things got outta whack. So I'm currently building a remote refugium in another stand. I think I have everything worked out except for sand. Do I want a deep sand bed here? I don't have one in my DT its only about 3" deep. I have roughly 30 pounds of fiji pink sand left over from my build, would this sand be sufficient or is there a better sand available for this? Thanks for the help!

IMO yes. It will only help and since your fuge will be remote if there ever was a problem with the DSB you could take the fuge offline to fix it. I made a newb mistake by putting my bed in my dt but if I could go back and do it over I'd actually do just a remote DSB in a 5 gallon bucket.

Thats a great place for a remote DSB.
You want 5 to 6" deep sand or many of us have 4" of reef mud/or clay kitty litter covered by 1 to 2" of fine grained sand (pink fiji will work if you have enough)

Alright, sounds like a want one then. I was looking at a few other builds and it appears that they have a finer sand than the Fiji pink. It would be nice to use it too since its leftover and already been rinsed heavily. I'm not opposed to ordering a different sand though if it would be more beneficial.

Here's a pretty good article on them. I have a couple others if you're into reading/research. I'd have to dig them out though.

Great read reefmonkey, if you have more I'd love to read them. I will definitely look into that sand to, looks like a really good price shipped. Thanks!
