Hello, I'm new to the Refugium thing and was getting many different answers on what to put in the refugium. I have 20 corals and 5 fish in a 150 gallon tank. I had my friend make me a 55 gallon refugium and i was wondering what i should put in refuge area?

Do i just put live rock and algea? Or live sand and mud? OR all? Please help! Thanks for your time!

    Hi Jacky

a lot is down to personal opinion
    but if it where mine

I would have DSB of about 4 -6 inches , macro algae such as Chaeto
and a couple of pieces of live rock rubble for the pods to hide in

I would go with sand, live rock and a good macro alagae such as cheato. I have heard that mud is good and all, but needs to be replaced. its expensive and the benefits arent all that great.

some sand and macro algae is probably the most important thing.

I was going to ask a similar question. I have a 30 gal refugium on my 90 soon to be a 150. For the last 8 months I have Miracle Mud, Live Rock, and Caulerpa. No problems. Just added a couple snails. What do you think about a crew of some kind in the refugium?

I'll 2nd Steve's recommendation. I have a 55g sump, a little less than 1/2 of it is a fuge with a ~6-7" DSB, cheato macro, some LR rubble. I also have halimeda and some blue algae growing in it, but that is not necessary. Some reefers use mud or sand/mud combo or just sand. There are quite a few macros to choose from but the most popular is probably cheato.
