I own a red sea max, that I modified for a refugium in the rear chamber. The way it is set up now the water comes in and goes by the skimmer, then the fuge with cheto, then a filter sponge. Is is critical to have the water going through a filter sponge prior to going into the fuge to remove free floating debris?

So would I have to clean out the fuge area more often or just let nature take its course?
