So i picked up this frag at a big als for like 5 bucks 6 months back, its grown nicely about 3x as many heads now but ive never known what they are. Today while browsing expensive zoas i came across Rising sun zoas. and the pic looked identical, im a little color blind so i have a very hard time comparing colors. does anyone else think these are the same?

    gonna bite the bullet!

sry this was the only way i could get the pic.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but to me they look like eagle eye zoanthids. They are pretty common. Still very cool and a great colony you have there.

Im not sure about the eagle eyes, most of the common pics i see have different colors. theres a few that are close but the polyp arm has the two tone color i find closer to the rising sun and the thicker black ring surrounding the neon orange/red. When i bought these the guy said the shipment came from the coast of africa and he wasn't sure what they were.

I personally find the naming of corals to be rediculous. Atleast to level they are. If its gorgeous Im going to buy it. And Id expect the price to be higher. But upon looking again you may be right. There is no harm in saying thats what they are. The names are just names. Even though it may raise the price alot. But thats in your favor anyway. lol

I used to not be in the naming of them, but after i got into sps and i started using all their names to differeniate. I had to start doing the same for my zoas. i have about 15 different colors and instead of saying the orange ones, or the green ones. I like saying rising sun. I find the high prices stupid, personally ive never paid over 20 bucks for a few zoas. Buying per polyp i think is crazy. but i am a fan of the names for zoas. thats my 2 cents.

True. For common names it is handy. For ones like rastas, which I have seen going for 50 a head, I find it to be ridiculous.

Very pretty zoas, I too think that all the naming is a little crazy, to some point i like it as I know what colors to expect on the other hand though when you are getting into the ego side of it some of these coral dealers get really serious about their named stuff and will get really *****y if you use their name on something that you didnt buy from them.
I dont understand how they can claim something that they didnt create. Most are found in and then fragged and reproduced asexually and then sold as special. Its all about how much someone will pay for something that you have.
My thoughts are if you are happy with them then it is a win. If someone wants to pay you $50 a head then you are "WINNING"

Those Zoas are nice. I can't decide on which to go with. Wish we had some of those locally.

They look the same to me, but remember those pasts are over a year old. Prices on zoas and other "rare" or "le" corals drop significantly in a year. The zoas you have there are really not worth much now if they really are rising sun zoas.
