The water out here in AZ is really hard water. I'm planning to get a water softener in the near future. Any ill effects on the RO/DI unit?

The water softener will make your membrane and DI resins last a lot longer.

Absolutely not. It'll actually make it work for a longer duration without maintenance of the DI resin or RO membrane. The carbon and prefilter still need to be changed every 6 months, though.

A softener will help with the quality of the water. Membranes are able to reject sodium or potassium better than other minerals/metals. This means the quality of the water will be better after the ro. I would still recomend normal filter changes in the entire system. The resin in the di cartridge will still fowl about the same time it would without the softener just not a noticeable. Also it doesn't take long for bacteria to start growing in the last filter housing, so you will still need to clean and change filters regularly to prevent this. Just because the Tds is low doesn't mean the water is top notch. Hope this helps.

All major membrane manufacturers recommend softened water.
