rock bacteria

If I just get the reefcleaners dry rock, Am I going to miss out on any benificial bacteria? Or just miss out on some good and bad hitchhikers and the copopods and amphipods?

 

If you are starting a tank with base rock, you need to seed it with live rock. The bacteria has to come from somewhere and so do the copepods, amphipods, coraline. Even though you could add something like bio-spira to get the cycle going and add live copepods to get them in, you will thank yourself later for buying some live rock. I would do maybe 1 pound of live rock to 5 or 10 pounds of base rock.

 

This isn't entirely true, you can cycle a tank with all base rock, adding lr may help to make the cycle faster but it is not necessary. You are right in that if you want coraline copepods etc. you may want to add come lr, but even in this case you may get some, in particular coraline.

 

I am not concerned about the pods just want good coraline but not to much of it either...

Was just curious about the bacteria benifits. But then stability is bottled bacteria so that shouldnt be a worry either.

 

Copapods are not always with live rock. I bought enuff to seed with from the store and even at night i see none......
