    +1 both are harmless and filter feeders so a good thing ;)

    Am i meant to do anything during my cycle other than monitor the water parameters and top off?

    I have an aqua c remora skimmer in my sump and it has worked wonderfully over nine years. Easy maintenance and I run a mag7 pump on mine just for kicks :)

    Reading .25ppm ammonia, 8.0 PH and zero everything else...

    API's kit can be very difficult to tell the difference between 0 & .25PPM. For a couple weeks I thought I was still seeing ammonia, however it was actually 0! I would recommend getting a Seachem ammonia monitor. You just suction it inside the tank and you are good to go. It will show down to .02PPM. I am currently using one while cycling a new nano tank and it is showing .05PPM where as API you can't tell whether it is 0 or .25!
