My wife has a 20g tank she is using for hermit crabs, would it be safe to convert this into my sump? After a thourough cleaning that is?

Yes, so long as any medication she has used was not copper based.

Make sure it's an aquarium and not just a critter tank. Aquariums are built to take the pressure exerted on the glass with 20g, or roughly 160lbs of water, while critter tanks aren't rated for filling with water. I may be wrong on this, but check around.
