I currently bought a Sail fin Tang and today i noticed a small hole in his top fin, will this heal on its own and what could have caused it.

I bought one last week and it fought with one of my yellow tangs. I was very worried and not only did it battle with ick it got a hole torn into the top but bottom fins. Within a few days I noticed not only did it get over the ick but the holes healed. I think this fish is a great fish and very strong fish. I hope yours pulls through also the way mine did. You can check out my post on it too. I too worried about my sailfin.

Did it have the hole when you bought it?

What else is in the tank? Do you have a picture of it?

My sailfin has a few bite holes from the other tangs. He mostly gets along with them except when the powder brown decides to be a cow and eat everything and not let anything else close. It is quite odd though. He is very protective of the sea weed strips, but he often pulls off more than he can chew and just lets it go, which the sailfin normally eats.

Have you noticed him sparing with another fish? Is it the kind of wound that could come from a fish bite? If you just added him he could be stressed, and be having a little fin rot.

    Good luck!!

I hope it works out. Sailfins rock!

It will heal on it's own as long as your params are good enough. I would try to find how the wound originated - Stare at your fish tank for a few hours and watch the behavioral patterns of all the fish. I know this may seem hard to do ;)

I was thinking a little fin rot too. Melafix mixed into food will fix it up fine. My Coral Beauty almost went down for the count because of fin rot. I did a three day treatment with Melafix and garlic. Worked like a charm.
