If my salinity is at 1.028 and i am doing a water change, should the salinity of the new mixed salt water be the same or a little less, like around 1.026? I have started keeping my tank hood closed and the salinity rises faster now for some reason? Is this because of the low amount of evaporation? I am afraid if i mix the salt to 1.028 that the salinity will rise into an undesirable range in a couple of days?

Definitely add water of lower salinity. Because of evaporation your salinity will only rise over time, so if it's at 1.028 I would try to get it down to a more acceptable level of 1.023-1.025. Depending on how much of a water change you are doing, I would probably add something around the range of 1.020-1.023.

I'm sure others will chime in, but that's what I would do. My salinity is always about 1.023-1.025 and topping off with fresh RO/DI water always keeps it around that level. When I do my water change I try to have my new water at about 1.023-1.024.

    best of luck!

I would do 1.022-3 on your next WC and not cover the tank.

+1 on not covering the tank unless you have jumpers in there.

+1 here. Evaporation should be replaced with RO/DI fresh, not salted water.

yes i am topping off with fresh RO/DI water. Why should i not cover the tank? It seems if i could prevent evaporation, i would not have to top off as much? Is there an advantage to evaporation?

Keeping a top on the tank lowers the rate of gas exchange..Your water needs to breathe!
